Costa Concordia salvage operation set to raise ship today

Posted by Anita Dunham-Potter On September - 16 - 2013

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 months since the Costa Concordia accident off the Italian island of Giglio. Sadly the accident claimed the lives of 32 people and left the gigantic cruise ship half-sunk and resting on its side. Today the ship is set to be raised due to the enormous engineering project that has taken over 18 months at a cost of $500 million – making it the largest and most expensive maritime salvage operation in history.

Costa Concordia Parbuckling ProjectDubbed the Parbuckling Project the process involves securing slings and cables around the vessel to help raise the ship upright. On the exposed side of the ship tanks filled with water will assist in rotating the ship upward, the water weight in the tanks will provide gravity to pull the exposed side down. On the underwater side of the ship similar tanks will be filled with air to help the ship float. The operation is delicate due to the size of Concordia and the fact that it is resting on a rocky sloping seabed. Read more about the process on the Parbuckling Project website and be sure to watch live streaming updates on BBC during the day.
