Cruise West ship runs aground in Alaska

Posted by Anita Dunham-Potter On July - 8 - 2008

Cruise West is getting a de ja vu experience all over again with one of its ships. Yesterday, the Spirit of Glacier Bay became grounded in Tarr Inlet near Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park. Spirit of Glacier Bay was formerly known as Spirit of Nantucket — the same ship that last November hit debris and began taking on water on an intercoastal waterway near Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Coast Guard launched two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters from Air Station Sitka, a 47-foot motor life boat and a 25-foot response boat from Station Juneau, and launched the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Liberty, from Auke Bay, to assist the vessel. All 51 passengers have been transferred off the 178-foot ship while an investigation is underway.
