Over 100 passengers and crew aboard Holland America’s Zaandam have become ill. The vessel returned to San Diego after a scheduled 15-day trip to Hawaii. According to a Holland America spokesperson, 99 passengers and 12 crew members were likely stricken by norovirus, a nasty virus that causes vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps for a 24 to 48 hour period. The vessel was carrying 2,039 passengers and crew.
The bug is highly contagious and the ship’s return voyage to Hawaii was delayed while the crew conducted a “super sanitation” of the vessel, disinfecting all public areas.
It was the second such outbreak recently on a Holland America ship out of San Diego. In late February, 105 passengers and six crew members became sick aboard the Ryndam during a 10-day voyage from San Diego to Mexico and back.
