Mona LisaThe cruise ship Mona Lisa ran aground early Sunday morning on a sand bank in the Irbe Strait, south of Estonia’s Saarema Island. The strait links the Gulf of Riga to the Baltic Sea. Tug boats have been unsuccessful trying to move the vessel off the sandbank. A few hours ago all 662 passengers, mostly Germans, were evacuated from the vessel. According the Associated Press, 322 crewmembers remain onboard as the salvage operation continues.

Built in 1966, the 30,000-ton Mona Lisa is owned by Miami-based Kyma Ship Management and is being marketed by Germany’s Lord Nelson Seereisen. In mid-April it completed a charter sailing as The Scholar Ship, where college students take semester-long voyages around the world while studying various subjects.
